The Science behind Nano Silver
Silver (Ag) is a known natural antimicrobial.
Historically, the first reported medical use of colloidal silver was in 1891, by B.C. Crede, a surgeon in wounds.
Silver became widely used from 1900 to 1940, but use tailed off after antibiotics were discovered and became widely used.
In 1960 Silver Nitrate (AgNO) and Silver Sulphadiazine (AgSD) were developed and were used extensively (topically) in treatment of burns.
More recently – in HealthCare – numerous wound dressings have been developed, along with silver tipped catheters, and bronchial/gastrointestinal lavages.
Commercially, there has been a plethora of silver containing applications, including washing machines, clothing, breast pumps, cosmetics and even contact lenses.
How Silver Works
Its exact mechanism is not fully understood, but Silver (Ag) has shown to:
- Disrupt cell wall of microbes
- Create an ROS production
- Deregulate ribosomes and enzymes
- Interact with DNA, thus destabilizing
- With both gram+ and –ve organisms Ag binds with the proteins and nucleic acids in the cytoplasm

Viral destruction is based on the ability of interrupting the invasion into a host cell through:
- Inhibiting penetration
- Interrupting protein synthesis and DNA replication
- Limiting viral assembly and release to another cell
SIZE MATTERS- the smaller the particle, the larger the surface area
Colloidal Silver is generally a mix of AgNP and Silver ions. Efficacy of Colloidal Silver depends on the size and quantity of particles available
Ionic vs Non- Ionic
- Ag ions interact and bind easily with other insoluble such as Cl- (AgCl) and proteins (albumin) thereby less particles are bioavailable and thereby antimicrobial action is limited
Nano Silver particles (AgNP)
- The smaller the Nano Particle the larger the available surface area (picture coffee beans before and after being ground into smaller particles) and thus the more efficient the silver.
- Nano particles are usually many different sizes and shapes also lending to their efficacy.
- Ag Nano Particles are able to replenish silver concentration when some silver ions have become bound, allowing ongoing mechanisms to exist.

The Science behind our NANOCHLOR Disinfectant Effervescent Tablet Range
Nanochlor Effervescent Tablets combine the power of Hypochlorous Acid (HOCL) – a molecule naturally produced in our bodies to fight pathogens – and Nano Silver Particles (AgNP), thus delivering the fast acting, effective disinfection of HOCl, along with the lasting protection of AgNP.
The first active ingredient is Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC or SDIC) – also known as Sodium Troclosene which is an organic chlorine donor that yields hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and monosodiumcyanurate (NaOCl) in a slightly acidic use-solution when mixed with water. These two ingredients remain in a constant 50-50 ratio in the use-solution, so that as part of the free chlorine is used up (due to reaction with bacteria, organic material etc), part of the combined chlorine in the NaOCl is freed to restore the 50-50 ratio and continue the disinfecting process. As a result, HOCl is more stable and has 4 times the killing power of hypochlorite’s such as bleach – particularly in the presence of organic contaminants. This is a major advantage in areas with high organic loading such as biofilms because the chemistry continues to be effective even when there is a high chlorine demand.
It is believed that the efficacy of HOCl is due to the fact that HOCl is very similar to the structure of HOH (water), of similar molecular size, and is electrically neutral – thus allowing it to penetrate cell walls as easily as water.
The second active ingredient is Nano Silver in the form of nano particles (<20nm) uniformly dotted onto the surface of a unique carrier molecule of 400-580nm. The Nano Silver particles “deactivate” pathogens by blocking their metabolic processes, thus delivering strong antimicrobial (anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal) properties, The unique Nano format delivers exponentially higher available silver surface area versus conventional colloidal silver, and the size of the carrier molecule ensures that our Nano Silver is non-cytotoxic.
What is Continuous Active Disinfection (CAD)?
Continuous Active Disinfection is the application of a surface chemical that has intermediate level disinfection on contact and then continuously disinfects potential pathogens that land on the surface thereafter.
With NaDCC, as the disinfectant dries on a surface, the HOCl will evaporate, while any chlorine still bound to the organic donor remains on the surface. If surfaces are wetted again by contact with aerosol droplets containing pathogens, the disinfectant provides persistent action when the donor releases its remaining HOCl molecule. Research has shown this persistent action can last up to 24 hours if the surface is undisturbed.
In addition to this, the Nano Silver (on the carrier molecule) remains active on disinfected surfaces, as demonstrated in SANS 5163 testing in which our Nanochlor Effervescent Tablets demonstrated a kill rate of 99.99% at 14 days.
Nanochlor Effervescent Tablets are thus a true “Continuously Active Disinfectant” (CAD) – a WORLD FIRST.
